Paths on Boards

Hints:

  1. Take a close look at either of the example paths. What do you notice about the color pattern as you move along the path?

  2. In both examples, the colors alternate between black and white with each step. Why might that be important?

  3. The first rectangle contains 12 squares, an even number. The second rectangle has 15 squares, which is odd.
➤ How might this difference between even and odd affect the path you can create?

  4. In the first rectangle, the number of white and black squares is equal.
In the second rectangle, there’s one more white square than black.
➤ What happens when the numbers of black and white squares aren’t balanced?
➤ Can a path that alternates colors visit every square?
